Building a network of contacts and learn how to get connected with the right people.Chances are you’ve already developed the basic skills of networking without even knowing it! How do you find our what movies are hot? Where do you find a good mechanic? How do you register for a course? What’s the latest gossip? The answer is obvious: through word of mouth, advertising and research. This is done by:

  • Speaking to friends and family,
  • Looking through the newspaper,
  • Researching on the internet,
  • Calling for information.
The same steps can be used when looking for a job! First things first… get organized. Use these tips to get you started:
  1. You need to develop a list of people and companies to contact. Start with names of people and companies you already know. You many want create a list to record the steps you’ve taken. Researching companies on the internet can also be quick and easy.
  2. Once your list is complied, you need to choose a method of making contact for each person or company you have listed. Remember, the more people you contact the better your chances of landing a job.
  3. Develop a green thumb. Networking is like planting seeds in a garden. In order for your network of contacts to grow, you will need to nurture your garden. Therefore, with proper care, or in this case follow-up, make sure to send them a note thanking them for their time
