What To Expect On Your First Day

First Impressions

Just as first impressions are important for job interviews, it is equally important for your first day at work.  This is a crucial time when you will meet and spend time your coworkers, supervisors and boss for the first time.  Remember to:

  • Arrive early
  • Act professional – be polite and respectful
  • Dress appropriately – dress conservatively or ensure your uniform fits properly, is clean and pressed
  • Introduce yourself
  • Shake hands with confidence and make eye contact when you are introduced to a colleague
  • Make and effort to remember names
  • Be motivated and ready to learn
  • Ask questions and be observant
  • Smile!

It is very natural to feel nervous, excited and anxious on your first day.  Remember that you have been chosen for this position, but are not expected to know everything and jump into your work!  Here are a few things that you might expect on your first day:

Meet with your Boss or Supervisor

This is a great opportunity to go over expectations and clarify areas of responsibilities for your position.  You may also take this time to ask any questions.

Tour of the Workplace

You will likely be guided through the building and workspace. Be sure to look around observantly.  Things like stairs and elevators, bathroom access, lunch areas will be help you during your first few days at work.  Also, this will be your first opportunity to meet your coworkers.  You will be introduced to many people and will find out who you will be working with the most.

Getting Set Up

There are many things that might need to be taken care on your first day. You may have to fill out forms as a new employee.  Depending on the company, you may need a security pass or identification card.  If you are working in an office environment, you may need to be set up with e-mail and internet access. 

Training

In many organizations, your first few days at work may involve training.  You may be asked to participate in a training workshop, go over health and safety information, or learn about certain equipment you will be using.
