Ability Focus

It isn’t a hidden fact that most people get employment because of who they know.  Networking is a key to job search success!  Connecting with an employer can happen anywhere… you never know who you will meet at a social gathering or at a meeting or at library.  Therefore the most important part of networking is to be prepared!  Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do I have my resume ready and have I had it reviewed?
  2. Do I have my cover letter ready and have I had it reviewed?
  3. Do I have several different ways I could start a conversation when I’m networking?
  4. Do I have a few business casual outfits ready?
  5. Do I have a business card ready (optional)?
  6. If you have a visible disability, are you prepared to discuss it in case it comes up or you decide to talk about it?
  7. If you have an invisible disability, decide on whether or not you would want to disclose.

The most important thing to remember is whether or not you can talk about your skills and strengths.  If you have a visible disability, there will be more of an emphasises to discuss your abilities.  Be confident and comfortable with you skills as well as your disability.  Do not give anyone the chance to focus on your disability, if visible.
