Tips and Advice
Regardless of
what method of contact you choose to use, the following tips
should be considered while connecting with potential employers
in person, over the telephone or by mail.
- Identify
the appropriate person
- Address
the potential employer by his/her proper name; ensure you
have the correct spelling of their name
- Ensure
you have the correct mailing address of the company or organization
- Proof
read very carefully all documents being sent to the employer
- Make
certain you have included a contact telephone number and/or
e-mail address in your resume and cover letter
- State
your name clearly
- Ask
politely if he/she has a few minutes to speak with you
- Briefly
state your qualifications and the position you are interested
in
- Ask
for an interview or meeting; this can also be included in
your cover letter
- If
there are no immediate openings, repeat your request for
an interview for future openings
- If
the answer is ‘no’, ask for other potential
leads and tell your contact you will check back
- Thank
him/her for talking to you and for any leads and information
they have shared with you
