Get A Social Insurance Number

Before you apply for a job, you will need to have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Your SIN is a nine-digit number that you must have to work in Canada. It is also needed to have access to government programs and benefits.

How to Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN):

In Person: You can apply for a Sin card at your local Service Canada Centre. An agent will assist you with processing your application online. You will need all the appropriate documents to apply. They must be originals and not photocopies.

This is the quickest and easiest way to apply for a SIN card. Also, when applying at a Service Canada Centre you will not have to send out any of your personal documents by mail.

By Mail: If you need to apply by mail, you must fill out an application form.

You will need to have available your original personal documents and send both the completed application and original documents (not photocopies) to:

Service Canada
Social Insurance Registration Office
P.O. Box 7000
Bathurst, New Brunswick
E2A 4T1

You may send your application and documents by regular mail or registered mail. Your documents will be sent back to you the same way. If your application is complete, you have all the appropriate documents and you meet all requirements, you should receive your card within 3 weeks.

More helpful information about your Social Insurance Number:

Your SIN card is a very important piece of identification. It should be kept with other important documents. If your card is lost or stolen, you should report it immediately.

For more information regarding your social insurance number or how to apply, refer to the Service Canada website.
